UREOL: 30 years ago Rudolf Rampf invented the first PU board

The RAMPF company is regarded as a pioneer when it comes to the production of modeling boards. Rudolf Rampf’s invention of the first polyurethane board under the name of UREOL was a triumph around the globe. Today, 30 years later, UREOL has turned into RAKU-TOOL® and RAMPF Tooling, based in Grafenberg, has become the biggest board producer world-wide. The secret of success are high quality materials and a strong distribution network.

Board

Unmistakable: the precise, unique grinding pattern on the surface of the RAKU-TOOL® boards

“I originally filed a patent for my first polyurethane modeling board which I invented in 1980. From the outset the board had excellent properties and became a symbol of quality“, explains Rudolf Rampf, senior partner of the RAMPF group. The idea behind his invention was to revolutionize the modeling market by replacing tropical wood like mahogany with the new plastic material which in comparison was a very stable material that could withstand the effects of temperature and humidity. “The new material allowed manufacturers to produce products with a precision previously not possible. With this development RAMPF set a new technical benchmark and along the way also made an important contribution to reduce deforestation of tropical forests“, comments Mr. Rampf further. To care about the environment has always been a key policy at RAMPF and recently RAMPF Tooling has introduced a new “eco board” into the market. The board RAKU-TOOL® MB-0540 is predominantly produced with recycling polyol from the sister company RAMPF Ecosystems. It exhibits a very fine surface structure, is easy to process and has a low coefficient of thermal expansion.

A distinctive precision grinding pattern stands for RAKU-TOOL® quality
The modeling boards which trade partners used to sell under the name UREOL and which are now available under the new brand name RAKU-TOOL® have become a symbol of high quality modeling and design. An unmistakable trademark of the semi-finished product is the visible, unique precision grinding pattern on the surface. The high product quality has not only convinced customers to buy the products but also competitors who used to sell the RAMPF board materials under their own brand name. RAMPF Tooling meanwhile insists on its independence for which the cornerstone was laid in 2006 when the company entered the market directly for the first time. It introduced a new, comprehensive product range based on epoxy and polyurethane chemistry for a broad range of tooling applications. “From 2010 onwards all board materials under the brand name RAKU-TOOL® will only be available directly from us or from one of our exclusive RAMPF accredited partners. We are represented in more than 20 locations world-wide where customers can obtain RAMPF quality products and also comprehensive service and advice”, emphasizes Heinz Horbanski, Managing Director of RAMPF Tooling. From Board to Close Contour Casting Based in Grafenberg, RAMPF Tooling has set up the largest board production world-wide and has greatly expanded its product range over the years. Its materials are used from design up to small series production and the product range comprises a complete range of boards, tooling systems, pastes and individually prepared large volume Close Contour Castings. “Whether fender, bonnet, sink, hull, rotor blades or important parts of the Airbus 380, we shape your ideas and many models have already been made with our products”, comments Rudolf Rampf.

RAMPF Tooling: faithful companion from idea to shape
Besides the automotive industry, the materials producer is also active in the aerospace, marine, transportation, foundry, ceramics, porcelain, wind energy, plastics and machine industries. To maintain its position in the ever growing market, RAMPF Tooling has expanded its capacities last year. A new innovation center was built which includes rooms for training sessions, a modern paste application center and a high-capacity laboratory. At the interface between laboratory and production RAMPF Tooling likes for its customers to actively get involved in the product devel-opment process. “A creative process is necessary as we are involved in the first phases of design from where ideas translate into results”, confirms Heinz Horbanski.
